Alternative Acoustic With A Pure, Emotional Edginess

Canadian-born singer/songwriter/guitarist Mimi Cross is currently distributing a wonderful cassette release, ironically entitled Demos. The music on Demos, while sparsely arranged with mainly voice and acoustic guitar, is far and away better than demo-quality material. The recording is clean and bright, and captures the edgy essence of the folk/pop/rock songwriting. Cross flavors her songs with jazz-tinged rhythm guitar work and pop hooks that enhance the emotional quality of her vocals. Demos is the opening statement of a immensely talented artist with a potentially huge future.

Born Mimi Aufderhar Cross, Mimi has been trained in classical music and has also studied jazz. She began performing several years ago in Asbury Park, New Jersey, sharing the bill with national acts such as Chris Whitley and Kristen Hall. From her home base just outside of New York City, Mimi currently plays live in clubs in the tri-state area, including the Manhattan clubs Hotel Galvez Mercury Lounge and the Bitter End. Her provocative work defies easy categorization, having been described as "left of folk, with an occasional pop hook."

Cross is now planning to record a full-length CD of her latest material in late 1997 or early 1998. The nine songs on Demos indicate that the possibility of future releases from this artist are sure to be met with excitement and anticipation.
