Red-hot slide? Hooky blues? Doors-y electric reinterpretations? Worldwide Slide, the latest CD from veteran guitarist Paul Fenton will fit the bill. Consisting of 11 tracks of slide-drenched, slide-dominated songs, the new release captures the essence of Fenton's single-minded goal to push the slide guitar into the forefront. The CD also features two acoustic 12-string Stella slide guitar blues numbers: a cover of Muddy Waters' "Gypsy Woman" and Memphis Minnie's "Crazy Crying Blues". The contrast between the ultra-dry vocals and the winsome, faraway sound of Fenton's slide work was a bit pronounced at first listen, but his talents on the guitar makes repeated playback a refreshing journey into the world of the bottleneck sound.
Paul has been playing guitar for over 20 years, attempting to satisfy a complete obsession with the possibilities of the slide guitar (electric and acoustic) in original blues and rock music. Blues-rooted but fired with hard-driving rock and roll energy and modern production and effects, his daring guitar solos show why he's been called "the most exciting and dangerous unsigned guitarist in the world" and praised by the likes of Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, George Thorogood and others. His discography dates back to 1977, including stints with The Action, The Fentons and The Bleedin' Hearts.
Fenton plans to gig in support of his new CD, both in Canada and in the United States, with dates scheduled in 1999 for Maine, Pennsylvania and Florida.
