John Scofield
Shinola
The Story
"Shinola" features jazz guitarist John Scofield and his bandmates (Steve Swallow on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums) during a live performance at Vielharmonie in Munich, Germany in December, 1981. Scofield rides in on a slow blues, and pilots the trio with vision and flair. The course he charts is filled with side journeys into the unknown, but Swallow and Nussbaum are up to the task. "Shinola" is possibly the most Scofield yet revealed on CD, almost certainly his most cohesive solo effort. In addition, the album is amazingly clean for a live recording. Overall, Scofield is challenged by the amount of space he has on "Shinola", and gives a response well worth hearing.
